While Beachgoers Fled Danger, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her back yard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard pops reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the street, talking to a duo who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He was sprinting at something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully full throttle racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, police and ambulance crews treating many the injured.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the scene of the violence becoming a makeshift medical station. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen taking action, such as rushing into the water to save people who were struggling.

After the events, messages of support were shared. One post shared appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer evil”.

The group of lifeguards issued a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind sentiments and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the team commented. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting started right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“These individuals demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the presence of such hatred.”
