🔗 Share this article Lando Norris Edges Out Piastri in Sao Paulo Practice Session The British driver has outscored Oscar Piastri at all of the previous five grands prix. The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the closing stages of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from his teammate by one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before sprint qualifying set to begin at the evening session. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four soon after starting. The Japanese slid over the track edges before sliding over the escape zone, and was lucky to escape with just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the high-speed corner approaching the final corner on to the start-finish straight. Hamilton wrapped up in P19, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the other competitors, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
