On the eve of his sixth anniversary in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge

The Spanish coach was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an cup win within months. But, that early success is still his lone significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal played immediately following his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

As trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal risk losing top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.

He is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, highlighting the constant necessity to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He added, commending the strong backing from the board and owners, but pinpointing the players' commitment as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team approaches the weekend fixture managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is anticipated to see him miss action for several weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the team's performances as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
